Top 10 tips for
a healthy weight
1 Try to be aware of how many calories you are eating and drinking every day. On average, men should consume about 2,500 calories and women 2,000 (this will be slightly less if you are trying to lose weight and slightly more if you are very active).
2 Eat a low fat, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
3 Take every opportunity to be active throughout the day, perhaps using a pedometer to count your steps.
4 Watch your alcohol intake – remember that alcoholic drinks can be full of calories!
5 Watch your portion sizes – remember each member of the family may need to have different sized meals depending on their age, height etc.
6 Plan meals and snacks for when you are out and about so you don't have to grab the nearest high calorie snack – try taking a healthy sandwich or salad with you, or some fruit or breadsticks.
7 Try to limit the family's time in front of the television or playing computer games – find other active and fun things to do instead such as playing in the garden or a walk to the park.
8 Set yourself some goals to motivate you to make changes.
9 Start the day with a healthy breakfast such as cereal with milk or wholemeal toast.
10 Go along to a weight loss service or group for help.
1 Before you start drinking decide how many units you are going to drink
and stick to it.
2 Drink lower strength alcohol, thus reducing unit intake.
3 Avoid drinking in rounds as you may end up drinking more than you
expected to.
4 Make sure that there are days in the week when you do not drink at all.
5 Don’t top up your drinks as you will be unable to keep a check on the
amount of units you have drunk.
6 Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks or water.
7 Don’t accept drinks from strangers.
8 Eat before you drink – food helps absorb alcohol and so limits how
quickly what you drink will get into your bloodstream.
9 Try keeping a drinking diary to see how much you actually drink in a
week.
10 Don’t take out too much money on a night out if you usually spend it all
on alcohol.
